  • We made the switch to Zoom for Government as soon as it became available — it was important for us to have the security that comes with it. There are a lot of good services out there but they don't meet the security standards for the Department of Defense.

Before Zoom, we struggled with the details of how to set up participation technology for classes when we had both local and remote (online participants. We were always sacrificing quality for either the local group or the remote group. With Zoom, we use the H.323 connection before class begins, send content through the video conference, and we don't have to touch the professor's computer. Multiple students can join the same session with a single link, and don't need to setup a login before class, and they don't need either Flash or Java, which has generated remote desktop support issues in the past, helping students to either upgrade their client software or browser. Faculty who join a session to teach or coach students have a strong suite of tools available to them from a thin client. Before, the software we gave them required VPN access, and we had technical support issues surrounding the download/installation/login process for the VPN software. So far, every remote participant who has used Zoom has not needed technical assistance! Zoom works so effortlessly and professionally that we now use it for dissertation defenses in which the doctoral student is presenting from our classroom in Sacramento, and one or more of the faculty committee members is participating virtually via Zoom. It's fabulous!"
