  • “Our business goal was to provide a best-in-class experience for our drivers. Something that was easy for them to use, intuitive, flexible enough for us to be able to put a customized workflow in front of them."

  • "We’re trying to have one source of record so that changes in one system dynamically update related systems to keep information consistent and current."

  • “One of the challenges was to communicate obstacles, errors and the need for adjustments throughout production. Quick decisions were necessary to keep up the pace of production."

  • “For Russian companies buying and using machine control systems for road-construction heavy equipment is still new, whereas foreign enterprises have already passed this stage long ago. For contractors in other regions constructing a 3D project design model and automatic control of equipment according this model is an approved and established technology. In Russia, road construction was the first area to leverage the new technology. In fact, it is reasonable because linear construction sites allow us to see the benefits of purchasing the equipment in the first few months. The contractor can choose whether the machine will operate using the robotic total station or GLONASS/GPS signals. Tests show that a machine with the automatic control system operates 40–70% faster than a machine without it. Some of our customers said that our systems allow them to finish work 2–3 times faster. As you can see, this purchase is an investment that makes a lot of sense. 3D Machine control systems were first introduced in Russia over 10 years ago, although Russian road workers at the time were not yet even considering that possibility. One reason is because the standards and codes of site acquisition at the time were extremely liberal. Deviations in road surface of up to 10 centimetres, plus or minus, were allowed. But life doesn’t stand still; in 2013 the standards and codes got more strict, and today the exactness in observing the planning documentation during site acquisition is 5 times higher than it was then. If clients are going to be ordering work done in accordance with the new standards, many contractors will have serious problems. One of the main advantages of using our equipment is that the road is built exactly according to the project design and the owner can be confident in the result: the construction site will be handed over without having to go back and re-do anything. This also influences the company’s output growth. Material cost savings is another reason many customers buy our automatic control equipment. According to the most conservative assessments, savings can amount to 2–4% of the total cost. It’s not difficult to evaluate the savings on road asphalt mix: even on one kilometre of road, one can save hundreds of thousands of roubles.”

  • “The first week we were there as instructors. There were many questions, and we handled them. We demonstrated to Sibavtoban’s employees that our system works reliably. Now the team at Sibavtoban work on their own. We would come to them just to ask how it was going. The advantage of automatic machine control technology is that it makes life easier for road construction contractors. There’s no need to take additional measurements; you just set up the total station and turn it on, and then do the main work—laying down asphalt. During the work, all the components of the levelling system are constantly controlled to avoid possible failures or breakdowns. All the information is available on the on-board computer screen; the operator only has to choose the direction of movement.”

  • “By using Business Center we’re able to include a lot more information in our models, and by doing it centrally we are aiming for better quality and efficiency. Before, everything was done locally so the surveyor needed to make all the models and then they had to drive out to the job site and deliver them.”

  • “With an excavator scale we don’t have to scale trucks as they’re leaving because we’ve already weighed the material as we excavated it. This saves us approximately two minutes per load, and our goal is to move 120 loads per day – so we’re shaving four hours off of our production schedule every, single day. That means we are able to increase our loads by 5% – or five loads per day – which really adds up over the course of two years.”

  • "The great thing about Trimble Earthworks is that it takes a skilled operator and makes them more self-sufficient, and it takes a good operator and makes them even better. You still need smart operators, but it's a tool that allows you to get so much more work done. Contractors new to grade control have to break through that wall and realize that the investment upfront will pay for itself very quickly. It’s really a no-brainer."

  • “Since we purchased this system, we have not received any overload fines. We expect the system to pay for itself on this job alone.”

  • “But, after a while of using the Trimble system in conjunction with the weighbridge, we could see that it was accurate and starting operating solely off the Trimble data.”

  • “When I heard about the new product, I was very interested and excited about going through the beta testing process. I definitely see value in helping the product be everything it can be and it was really a great opportunity for both of us.”

  • “We had two guys running two PC 1250 120 tonne excavators and noticed production on one machine was slower than the other. We swapped these guys around to see if it was the truck; and it wasn’t. With accurate data about payloads, we could see this kind of information immediately and easily start the conversation as we had actual data to point to. We found ways to improve their performance with more accountability through daily, even hourly, production check-ins.”

  • “The technology solution provided by Trimble and the working partnership developed with SITECH WA has allowed Georgiou to discover the benefits this technology can deliver to the business for earthworks projects of this size and nature. The positive outcomes from this project have enabled Georgiou to utilise this technology to manage productivity on future projects. With a better understanding of the Trimble hardware and software, we are now challenging Trimble to provide additional functionality to further improve productivity."

  • “The old way of doing site layout for a house, for example, is to hire a surveyor, which is almost always slow, or to take measurements from two known points and pull ties with a tape measure to find the corners. With Trimble site positioning technology, I can layout a 420-foot long driveway and all house corners in about 25 minutes, instead of the two hours it would take to do it the old way. That’s incredibly useful for a small business like ours. One guy can be so much more productive, laying out an entire house lot or a septic system without having to take the other guy off his job. It’s a huge time savings.”

  • “The arrangement with the UHF and VHF radios works really well for the base data reception. And we have the ability to communicate with the base stations from the comfort of our air conditioned office.”
