“Before we can build machine learning models, we have to process the viral genomes and identify mutations, which can be computationally demanding. It’s not clear which will work best, so we have to take a trial-and-error approach to identify the most accurate algorithm. Processing all the publicly available genomes sequentially would take over 200 days—but since Azure facilitates highly parallelized computing with Azure Batch, we can build and test models in parallel, cutting the total processing time to less than a week.”
